THE FASCINATION WITH THE ECHELON.
Since I was 11 years old, I’ve seen quite a lot of fandoms. I had heard about Mars, that their fans had a name, the Echelon. I never knew that it was more than a name.
Not one of the fandoms I’ve experienced even came close to what the Echelon are. Other fandoms sometimes seemed to be made of hate and jealousy. Like everyone’s competing. I’ve heard people at concerts say: „I don’t mind if my best friend breaks her leg when she’s running into the venue; I want to be front row.” I’ve seen people getting seriously injured on purpose. So others could come closer to the band. All that usually matters, is how many times you’ve seen a band. How often you have met them. It’s always ‘who is the best fan’ – like there are ‘good’ and ‘bad’ fans.
I’m not pretending that things like these do not happen when it comes to the Echelon. But I was literally overwhelmed to see that things could be so completely different.
You have to face this: there is this band we all love, whether it’s about the guys themselves, the music, or both. They have created the principle of the Echelon. They have told us to love and respect each other. That we are all one big family, which they are also part of themselves. But does it really matter? Should it be a complaint that we are all listening to what they tell us to do?
The Echelon DO love each other. I’ve seen people becoming best friends. People helping complete strangers – family. The only thing everyone has in common is the love for a band. But being an Echelon means being open for others, in some way. You are willing to be part of it. You show people can count on you, and you know there’s always people (even though they might be strangers, now) that are there to catch you when you fall.
Sometimes when I see Echelon coming together, I feel like they are literally able to change something in the world. It’s amazing what people have already reached together. There’s a lot of themes Mars has asked our attention for and the Echelon are the ones that spread the word and can actually DO something. Mars inspires the Echelon, the Echelon inspire Mars.
‘Inspiration’. That word describes this fandom even more than the word ‘family’, to me. It’s all about art. About love, about starting to make a change by yourself. Sometimes I wish the Echelon could rule the world. That there was a world leader that would inspire just EVERYONE, the way Mars inspires us. I wish everyone could live in peace this way. That everyone would respect and love each other. Just because… we are all human?
But for now, I am so proud to be part of this. We were the Kings and Queens…
